The Secretary of State for the Colonies has approved of the grant of a salary to Mr. W. S. Cuff, Traffic Inspector, of £420 per annum as from 1st January, 1931.

Provision in the current estimates was made at the old scale viz. £390 p.a. from 1st January to 13th March, 1931 and £405 p.a. from 14th March to 31st December, 1931, at exchange 1 4.

A supplementary vote of $1,158 is therefore required. (C.S.O. 6261/13).

Owing to the fall in exchange the cost in local currency of stores already ordered exceeded the estimate by $14,584.95 thereby exhausting the vote.

It is estimated that a further sum of $10,000 will be necessary to cover the cost of stores required up to the end of 1931.

The above is to be met from savings under Provisions for patients (1931 Estimates page 54 sub-head 20). (C.S.O. 15 in 173/31).

48.--31, Public Works Extraordinary:-29, Hong Kong Port Works, Ferry Piers (Western). To complete work commenced in 1930

A sum of $40,000 was provided in 1930 (Head 31, sub-head 39, page 85) and $20,000 in the current Estimates

The first instalment of the work, Contract value $34,200, and comprising the construction of a reinforced concrete structure was due to be com- pleted on 11th November, 1930. The value of work actually completed at end of year amounted to $18,360 leaving an unexpended balance on 1930 Vote amounting to.

The second instalment of the work, valued $26,800 consists of the erection of a steel bridge to span the space between the shore and reinforced con-

crete structure.

49.-35, Charitable Services :—Grant in aid Flood Relief Fund

With the approval of the Secretary of State and the Finance Commit- tee of the Legislative Council, Government has donated a sum of $20,000 to the Tung Wah Hospital to be used for relief work in the Liang Kwang Provinces where great distress has occurred as the result of the floods.

A formal vote is now required. (C.S.O. 1 in 502/31).
